Apple TV allegedly hacked to play XviD

The blagosphere is buzzing about the alleged, near-instant (read: 3 days since launch) hacking of the Apple TV to play XviD (and all Perian-supported file types). The hack requires a skosh of hardware hacking--pulling out the Apple TV's hard drive--before putting it into an enclosure, and then loading it up with codecs and a new startup script. The Apple TV apparently runs a version of OS X, which is a boon to the modding effort.

XviD, 3ivX, H.264, VP6, and Flash - thats the best of everything...
-Makes AppleTV actually a bit enticing.
